Eroica is one of the most charming and complex novels in Greek literature. Ever since it appeared in 1938, generations of Greeks have succumbed to its nostalgic and impressionistic evocation of a bygone age: at the time of its publication, the story it tells had taken place about thirty years earlier, when the narrator –now middle-aged—was fourteen years old.

With makeshift helmets and an old fire pump, a band of boys enacts a make-believe world of heroes and myths. But the loss of a companion and an unexpected encounter in a strange garden force the boys to confront love, death and disillusionment, shattering their childish fantasies as they are thrust into the realities of adulthood.

Translated by Elisabeth Herschbach. Winner of the 2009 Elizabeth Constantinides Memorial Translation Prize from the Modern Greek Studies Association.
